“In Fall 2019, Metro completed a two-year feasibility study evaluating a number of alignments and station locations via monorail and heavy rail (tunneling) or a combination of both for a high-capacity transit project between the San Fernando Valley and LAX. In March 2021, Metro Board of Directors awarded contracts to two private sector teams to further develop these concepts and pursue construction of the project as a public-private partnership. Metro plans to begin the environmental review process with a scoping period planned for this fall 2021, with concept designs for these and other alternatives advanced and/or refined through extensive, ongoing public feedback and technical investigation and analysis.

Metro acknowledges to make public transit an attractive and competitive travel option they need to increase the speed, frequency, capacity and reliability of transit service and provide convenient connections to existing and planned transit corridors.

Under Metro’s 28 by 2028 initiative, the Valley-Westside portion of the project has been identified as a candidate for potentially accelerated completion by the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles (LA 2028).

I-405 Sepulveda Pass ExpessLanes Project

Metro recognizes that this heavily traveled Sepulveda Corridor requires more than a single solution. In addition to the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project, Metro, in coordination with Caltrans, is evaluating alternatives to convert the existing HOV lanes on the I-405 Sepulveda Pass, between US 101 and the I-10 to ExpressLanes. Public scoping for the environmental document for this project is expected by late Summer 2021.”
